Gil was born to Gilbert and Rozale (Becky) on 13th July 1963 in San Antonio, Texas. He is the eldest of 5 children and his ethnicity is Comanche Native American.
Due to his father’s military job the Birmingham family moved frequently. The constant moving around took a toll on Gil and he grew up as an angry and lonely child.

Gil’s entry into the acting industry is quite the story. The actor was spotted in a gym by a talent scout- where he had been bodybuilding and entering body building contest- because of his physic he was offered a role in Diana Ross’ hit music video ‘Muscles’.
After his role in the music video, Gil decided to pursue acting. He studied acting with Larry Moss and Charles Conrad.
The talented actor first appeared in television in 1986, he has appeared in a number of series since then. His first feature film was The Doe Boy in 2001, where he played Danny Deadmarsh.
In 2008 he was cast as the wheelchair bound Quileute Tribe chief Billy Black in the Twilight movies. His role in the Twilight movies opened doors for him to other major film roles; to name a few Gil voiced the wounded bird in the animation film Rango alongside Johnny Depp. In 2016 he played Alberto Parker next to Jeff Bridges in Hell or High water. Birmingham also played a grieving father in the 2017 film Wind River.
Needless to say Gil became one of the well -known actors and his talent didn’t go unnoticed. In 2001 his first film The Doe Boy won the Sundance International Filmmaker’s Award. That was followed by the First American in the Arts (FAITA) award for an “Outstanding Performance in a Recurring role” in Body & Soul. In 2005 Gil won the American Indian LA Film and Television Award for ‘Outstanding Supporting Role’ in Dreamkeeper.
