His full names are Stephen Joshua Sondheim. He was born in New York City in March 22, 1930. He is well known for his work and contribution in the music theater. He has been active since 1954 and he has not called it quits yet.

His parents, Herbert and Janet (née Fox) Sondheim were New York’s garment industry workers. The dad was a dress manufacturer while his mom was a designer. Their marriage never lasted as they divorced in 1942 and young Sondheim had to move with his mother to Doylestown, Pennsylvania. This early move in his life exposed him to piano and organ which he studied with lots of passion. He started practicing songwriting while studying at the George School. He owes his success partly to his role model, Oscar Hammerstein II who was a son of Broadway lyricist and producer.

His professional career began in television by writing scripts for the TOPPER and THE LAST WORD series. He did this side by side with writing scripts for music for the Broadway musical “Girls of Summer.” His meeting with Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins and Leonard Bernstein helped him to get the role of a lyricist for “West Side Story,” that hit the media in 1957. This was the beginning of his fame as his involvement helped to produce one of the most successful shows ever watched on Broadway. His success did not stop there as he was again involved in the production of “Gypsy” in 1959.

In 1962 he produced “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” a show that had an inspiring run of close to 1,000 performances which helped it to win the Tony Award for Best Musical and transformed into a successful film in 1966.

In 1970 Sondheim produced “Company” and the following year, the “Follies,” a retrospective of the “Ziegfield Follies,” in which the composer created a unique blend of the nostalgia of popular songs of the past with his own style of sentimental ballad. This earned him both the Drama Critics and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical of 1971.

He continued with great work in the better part of the 70s with several accolades and honors to his name. Enter the 80s and he was still there, his later works included the film score for REDS produced in 1981 and “Sunday in the Park with George” produced in 1984. The “Sunday in the Park with George” film won him the 1985 Pulitzer Prize. In 1987 he produced the “Into the Woods” that was a musical hit which added fame to Broadway.

He continued his work throughout the 80s with a slower pace into the 90s. In the year 2000, he received the Praemium Imperiale award from the Japan Art Association which was an honor for his contribution in the film and theater industries.
